The fitted sheet is the sheet that goes on the mattress; it's just called ';fitted'; because it has elastic on both ends. The other version would be the ';flat'; sheet - that's just a big sheet you have to put on your mattress and tuck it in around by yourself. The fitted once are nicer to handle - they dont need re-adjustment in the morning because they stay in place.
It fits over both, the corners should all tuck in to keep the sheet taut.
